MODELLING OF AIR POLLUTANTS RELEASES FROM THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT KRŠKO
P. Mlakar #, M. Božnar#, B. Breznik*, A. Kovač*,# Jožef Stefan Institute, Jamova 39, SI-1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia*Krško Nuclear Power Plant, Vrbina 12, SI-8270 Krško, Slovenia Extended Abstract Modelling of air pollutants dispersion in the atmosphere around the nuclear power plant is one of the important tasks that should be managed for the higher safety of the local population. In the Nuclear Power Plant Krško a simple Gaussian model is operating one line (built according to Regulatory Guide 1.145 instructions). But due to complex terrain surrounding the power plant this model does not give reliable enough results. Gaussian puff models and Lagrangean particle models that can both use the 3D wind field reconstruction are the ones that are capable of relatively accurate reconstruction of air pollution phenomena on short distances around the source of pollution located in complex terrain. Lagrangean particle models are more powerful than the puff ones, but they are also much more computer time and space consuming. In fact, no applications of Lagrangean models in real time with detailed complex terrain have yet been reported. Lagrangean models are still more in research than in applied version. Gaussian puff models are less powerful, but they are still sufficient to reconstruct the majority of air pollution mechanisms above the complex terrain. Because of Gaussian puff models capabilities and because they are not so complicated to apply, the Nuclear Power Plant Krško has decided to apply one in the real time with automatic data collection within its Ecological Information System. Gaussian puff model with 3D wind field reconstruction based on SODAR measurements represents the best price to performance level now available.
